Cycle Ranch hosts final round of motocross championship

FLORESVILLE — It was a wild weekend of racing at Cycle Ranch July 19-20, as the Texas Motocross Championship Series completed its fifth and final round of racing.

More than 260 entries were made to the various race classes, and there were a number of exciting finishes. The naming of the points series champions eventually highlighted the races.

While local riders didn’t take home every trophy, they did make a solid showing. Riders from San Antonio, Seguin, Elmendorf, Adkins, La Vernia, and Floresville all showed their talent and skill.

In the smallest racing class, 51cc junior stock, it was Drake Sanchez and Parker Johnson of San Antonio sharing moto wins during the final round of racing. Sanchez ended up on top of the points battle, however, taking first-place honors, with Johnson finishing second.

In the 51cc open stock and senior classes, Brandon Johnson of San Antonio was the top local finisher as he claimed third place in each.

Cameron Kothman of Adkins motored his way to a pair of championship trophies aboard his KTM-powered motorcycles. Kothman finished first in points for both the 65cc junior and open classes. San Antonio riders Zach Vanluvanee and Hunter Neal also finished well, taking home second- and third-place trophies for the 65cc classes.

Tyler Hanke of San Antonio took first in the 85cc open class, Cody Pitts of Floresville was third in the 85cc junior class, Anthony Mancha of San Antonio was second in the 85cc beginner class, and Matthew Hernandez of La Vernia drove his Kawasaki to a third-place series finish in the 85cc beginner class. Floresville native Trent Pitts picked up a fifth-place finish in both the July 20 race and the series points standings for the 85cc senior class.

In the supermini 85-105 and 150 four-stroke class, Jacob Turbyfill of San Antonio picked up the final-race win, but the points championship went to T.J. Tuttle from Boerne. A.J. Boelens of San Antonio and Cody Dunn of La Vernia finished second and third in the points, respectively. Cody Moore, also from La Vernia, earned enough points in the final race to finish ninth in the series standings.

In the MX lites beginner division, Mack Crockett of San Antonio finished third, and Davy Crockett finished fifth. Johnathan Cojocar of San Antonio wrapped up the points title in the lites intermediate class, and Robert Wilhelm of Adkins just missed the podium with his fourth-place series finish.

Justis Chandler of Bayside took home the title in the MX lites novice division, but local rider Robert Adcock of Elmendorf finished second. Taylor Stasny of China Grove missed the final race June 20, but still earned enough points for a seventh-place series point finish.

In the schoolboy division, Adcock and Wilhelm grabbed the two top spots.

San Antonio’s Broc Stockton won the motocross intermediate title, and Robert Stivers, also from San Antonio, finished fourth in the motocross novice class.

La Vernia’s Cody Dunn earned the title in the four-stroke mini class, and Tyler Hanke and Kory Bard of San Antonio finished second and third, respectively.

James Washington of San Antonio locked up fourth place in the over 25 amateur class, and Erich Sonntag Sr. of San Antonio finished second in the over 40 amateur class.

The next race at Cycle Ranch Motocross Park will be the “Back to School Race” Aug. 10.
